Adding Media Folders
FunHoard needs to know where your media files are. You can add any number of folders — local drives, external drives, or network shares.
Adding a Directory
- Log in to the web interface as an admin
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top navigation
- Go to Manage Directories
- Click Add Directory
- Enter:
- Name — a friendly name (e.g. “Music”, “Films”, “Audiobooks”)
- Path — the full path to the folder (e.g.
/Volumes/MEDIA/Music)
- Click Save
FunHoard will immediately start scanning the folder for media files.
Supported Media Types
You can configure each directory to scan for specific types:
| Type | Extensions |
|---|---|
| Audio | mp3, m4a, flac, wav, ogg, aac, wma, opus, aiff |
| Video | mp4, mkv, avi, mov, m4v, webm, wmv, flv |
| Documents | pdf, epub, txt, md, html, docx, pptx |
| Images | jpg, png, gif, webp, svg, bmp, tiff |
Scanning
After adding a directory, FunHoard automatically:
- Scans all files recursively (including subfolders)
- Extracts metadata — title, artist, album, duration, codec info
- Monitors for changes and rescans periodically (default: every hour)
You can see scanning progress in the web interface — the directory shows a spinning indicator while scanning.
Manual Rescan
To force a rescan:
- Click the refresh icon next to a directory in Manage Directories
- Or restart the Directory Scanner service
External Drives
FunHoard handles external drives gracefully:
- If a drive is disconnected, files are marked as “missing” but not deleted from the database
- When the drive is reconnected, the next scan automatically recovers all files
- FunHoard will never mass-mark files as missing if the entire drive is inaccessible — it detects disconnected drives and skips them
Password-Protected Directories
You can protect sensitive directories with a password:
- Edit the directory in Manage Directories
- Enable Password Protection
- Set a password
Protected directories are hidden from the library until unlocked. Users must enter the password to browse or play files from protected directories. The lock resets when the app is closed.
